Cardanol, also known as Cashew Phenol, is a bio-based phenolic compound derived from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). It is a naturally occurring monohydric phenol containing a C15 unsaturated hydrocarbon side chain attached at the meta position of the aromatic ring.
Chemical Formula: C₆H₄(OH)–(CH₂)₇–CH=CH–CH₂–CH=CH–(CH₂)₂–CH₃
Properties:
- Light pale brown to yellow liquid derived from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL).
- Also commonly known as Cashew Phenol.
- The unique molecular structure of Cardanol, particularly its long unsaturated C15 hydrocarbon side chain, enables excellent cross-linking during polymerization.
- The hydrophobic side chain imparts outstanding water repellency, weather resistance, and durability to polymer coatings.
- Cardanol-based resins exhibit excellent resistance to mineral oils, acids, alkalis, and many chemical agents. They also possess antimicrobial properties as well as resistance to termites and insects.
- Provides enhanced flexibility, excellent film formation, good drying characteristics, superior electrical insulation, and excellent thermal stability.
- Its chemical structure allows versatile modification at the hydroxyl group, aromatic ring, and side chain, enabling the development of tailor-made, high-performance polymers for a wide range of industrial applications.
- As a renewable, bio-based raw material, Cardanol serves as an effective and sustainable alternative to petroleum-based phenol in numerous resin and polymer applications.
