Phenalkamine hardener is a high-performance epoxy hardener, prepared from cardanol, a renewable ingredient obtained from cashew nut shell fluid (CNSL). They are produced via the Mannich reaction involving cardanol, an aldehyde such as formaldehyde and an amine.

The curing agent phenalkamine allows rapid curing at temperatures as low as 0°C, even in high humidity conditions. Their excellent moisture resistance, surface resistance, adhesion, ductility, durability and chemical resistance make them particularly suitable for harsh environments.

They are widely used in epoxy formulations for protective and marine coatings, tank linings, industrial floors and heavy duty corrosion protection systems. Phenalkamine-cured epoxy coatings have strong adhesion to substrates such as steel, concrete and other metals.

In forced-curing industrial coating applications, phenalkamine curing agents can reduce energy consumption by allowing lower curing temperatures in the oven. Their fast curing properties can also increase production line speeds, improve operational efficiency and reduce the risk of coating failure.
